Step-by-step guide to trekking Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) — trail difficulty, timing, altitude tips, viewpoints, and what to expect inside.

About Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)

Paro Taktsang, popularly called Tiger's Nest, is Bhutan's most iconic landmark — a sacred Buddhist monastery dramatically built into a 900-metre sheer granite cliff face in the Paro Valley. It is said that Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this location on a tigress and meditated in a cave for three months, giving rise to the monastery's name.

Trek Distance, Elevation & Difficulty

Total Distance: ~9 km round-trip. Starting Elevation: 2,600 m. Tiger's Nest Elevation: 3,120 m. Elevation Gain: ~520 m. Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Estimated Time: 4–6 hours round-trip including time at the monastery.

Trail Details

The trail starts at the Paro Valley trailhead near a cafeteria building. The path winds through blue pine and oak forests decorated with prayer flags. There are four main viewpoints, with the best view at a small wooden café (midway rest point). From the café, the trail descends then climbs steep stone steps to reach the monastery's entrance bridge.

What to Expect Inside

Tiger's Nest complex includes 13 sanctuaries and 8 caves. Key shrines: the main Guru Rinpoche cave where he meditated, Tshepame (Amitabha) and Tshering Nga Dhi (Five Sisters) shrines. Photography is not permitted inside the monastery. Dress modestly — full sleeves and covered legs required.

Tips for a Successful Hike

Start early (7–8 AM) to avoid afternoon heat and crowds. Carry minimum 1.5 litres of water and energy snacks. Ponies are available for the lower half of the trail (INR 300–400). The midway cafeteria serves hot tea and lunch. Allow extra time for acclimatisation if arriving from sea level.

Getting There

Tiger's Nest trailhead is 12 km from Paro town centre. Taxis available from Paro town (~₹200–300 one way). Most Glen View Travels Bhutan packages include a dedicated Tiger's Nest trek day with local guide.
