Complete guide to Thimphu — Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong, Folk Heritage Museum, Memorial Chorten, Centenary Farmers Market, and local food.

Thimphu Overview

Thimphu (2,320 m altitude) is the world's only national capital with no traffic lights — instead, white-gloved traffic police direct vehicles at intersections. It is a fascinating blend of ancient Buddhist tradition and modern urban life, with dzongs and monasteries sitting alongside shopping malls and coffee shops.

Buddha Dordenma Statue

The 51.5-metre-tall gilded bronze Buddha Dordenma statue on Kuenselphodrang hill is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Inside the statue: 100,000 smaller 8-inch and 125,000 smaller 12-inch Buddha statues in gold and bronze. The view of Thimphu valley from the hilltop is spectacular.

Tashichho Dzong

Thimphu's main fortress and administrative centre. Built in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1962, this dzong houses the King's throne room, government ministries, and the Central Monastic Body. The exterior is grandly illuminated at night. Best visited in the afternoon (8 AM–5 PM; closed public holidays).

Memorial Chorten

Also called the National Memorial Chorten, this stupa was built in 1974 as a memorial to Bhutan's third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is an important place of worship for Thimphu's residents, who circumambulate the chorten daily with prayer wheels and rosaries. Open sunrise to sunset.

Centenary Farmers Market

Visit on a weekend when farmers from surrounding villages bring fresh produce, local cheese, dried chillies, ema datshi ingredients, traditional handicrafts, and woven textiles. The market is open Saturday–Sunday and is the authentic heart of Thimphu.

Local Food to Try

Ema Datshi: Bhutan's national dish — fiery chilli and cheese stew. Phaksha Paa: pork belly with red chillies and radish. Jasha Maroo: spicy minced chicken curry. Suja: traditional salted butter tea. Ara: local rice or wheat wine.
