Everything about Punakha Dzong — history, architecture, the Punakha Tshechu festival, suspension bridge, and how to get there.
Punakha Dzong Overview
Punakha Dzong (Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong — 'The Palace of Great Happiness') stands at the confluence of Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River) in Punakha Valley at 1,200 m elevation. Built in 1637–1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it is the most photographed monument in Bhutan and the country's second administrative centre.
History & Significance
Punakha Dzong served as Bhutan's capital and seat of government until 1955. It has been damaged and rebuilt multiple times due to floods and fires. The dzong houses the sacred relics of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Pema Lingpa. The national assembly met here until the move to Thimphu.
Architecture Highlights
The dzong complex is 180 m long and 72 m wide, with a 55-metre-high utse (central tower). Six-storey white-washed walls rise from the riverbanks. Traditional Bhutanese architecture uses no nails — only wood-joinery and clay. Inside: three courtyards, the Machhen Lhakhang (oldest), and royal throne room.
Punakha Tshechu Festival
Held annually in February/March, Punakha Tshechu is famous for its dramatic outdoor Cham mask dances, thongdrel (giant applique tapestry) unfurling, and Hilarious Atsara (clown) performances. The festival recreates the historic battle victory of Zhabdrung against Tibetan invaders in 1639.
