Phobjikha (Gangtey) glacial valley guide — Black-Necked Crane migration, Gangtey Goenpa Monastery, Nature Trail, and November Crane Festival.
Phobjikha Valley Introduction
Phobjikha (also called Gangtey Valley) is a broad U-shaped glacial valley at 2,900 m elevation in central Bhutan's Wangdue Phodrang district. Unlike most Bhutanese valleys that are narrow, Phobjikha is unusually wide and flat — a bowl-shaped wetland that serves as the winter home for hundreds of endangered Black-Necked Cranes migrating from Tibet.
Black-Necked Cranes
Every October to February, approximately 400–600 Black-Necked Cranes (Grus nigricollis) migrate south from the Tibetan plateau to winter in Phobjikha Valley. These endangered birds, revered as sacred in Bhutan, are only found in the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau. The best crane viewing is November–January at dawn and dusk near the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) Crane Information Centre.
Black-Necked Crane Festival
The annual Black-Necked Crane Festival is held at Gangtey Goenpa on November 11 each year. Local school children perform traditional masked dances and songs themed around the cranes. The event includes conservation awareness programs, puppet shows, and colourful costumes. It's a joyful, community-driven celebration unlike any formal tshechu festival.
Gangtey Goenpa Monastery
Founded in 1613 by Gyalse Pema Thinley (grandson of the treasure revealer Pema Lingpa), Gangtey Goenpa is the main Nyingma school monastery in western Bhutan. The monastery undergoes major renovations and hosts 200+ monks. Sunrise views of the monastery against the misty valley are outstanding.
Phobjikha Nature Trail
The 1.5-hour circular Phobjikha Valley Nature Trail (5.2 km) circles through wetlands, past traditional black-roof farmhouses, through spruce and fir forests, and back to Gangtey village. Interpretive boards explain crane ecology, village livelihoods, and wetland hydrology.
Getting to Phobjikha
From Thimphu: ~4.5 hours (134 km). From Punakha: ~2 hours. The road crosses the Pelela Pass (3,420 m) en route from Thimphu through Wangdue Phodrang. Glen View Travels combines Phobjikha with Punakha and Thimphu in 7-night central Bhutan packages.
