Haa Valley — Bhutan's most isolated and pristine valley, Chele La Pass (3,988 m), White & Black Lhakhang temples, traditional nomadic culture.

Haa Valley Introduction

Haa Valley (2,670 m) in southwestern Bhutan is one of the country's least visited yet most beautiful valleys. Ringed by peaks including Jowo Drakhye (4,950 m), the valley was closed to tourists until 2002. It remains a model of pristine, traditional Bhutanese rural life with yak herders, apple orchards, and ancient lhakhangs.

Chele La Pass (3,988 m)

Chele La is the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, connecting Paro Valley to Haa Valley. At 3,988 m, the pass offers panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m) and the Haa Valley far below. The pass is covered in prayer flags and rhododendrons bloom spectacularly here in April–May. The road is snow-covered November–February.

Lhakhang Karpo & Lhakhang Nagpo

The White Temple (Lhakhang Karpo) and Black Temple (Lhakhang Nagpo) in Haa town are believed to have been built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century as part of his 108 temples to subdue a demoness. The pair represent peaceful and wrathful deities respectively.

Nomadic & Yak Herding Culture

Haa Valley's high-altitude meadows (above 3,500 m) support seasonal nomadic camps where herders bring yak herds in summer months. Travellers who venture to Uesu (seasonal herding camp) can experience traditional yak-herding culture, yak-milk butter preparation, and nomadic tent dwellings — a rarity in modern Bhutan.

Haa Summer Festival

Held annually in July, the Haa Summer Festival showcases traditional highland nomadic culture with yak polo, traditional archery, yak beauty pageants, local organic food stalls, and cultural performances. It's one of Bhutan's newest but most popular festivals.

Best Way to Include Haa

Haa Valley is typically added as a 1–2 day extension from Paro (1.5 hours via Chele La Pass). Glen View Travels offers dedicated Haa Valley Escape packages (5D/4N) including Chele La Pass sunrise, temple visits, and optional Haa homestay experiences.
