Everything about Chele La Pass — how to drive up, Mt. Jomolhari views, prayer flags, Paro–Haa Valley crossing, best months, and what to bring.
Chele La Pass Introduction
Chele La (also written Chelele La) at 3,988 metres is the highest motorable pass in Bhutan and one of the highest paved roads in the Himalayan region. It sits on the ridge separating the Paro Valley to the east from the Haa Valley to the west, making it a spectacular gateway between two of Bhutan's most distinct valley cultures.
Driving to Chele La Pass
From Paro: 40 km (1.5 hours). The road climbs steeply through mixed broadleaf-conifer forests, past prayer flag arrays, through yak pasture zones, and finally onto the barren windswept pass. The final 5 km involves sharp switchbacks with breathtaking valley views. The road is one-lane in sections — be prepared for oncoming vehicles.
What to See at the Pass
At the top: an enormous collection of prayer flags strung between bamboo poles stretching in every direction. On clear days (October–April), an unobstructed view of Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m) and the Jichu Drake range. In April–May: dense rhododendron blooms in red, pink, and white create spectacular foreground colour against snow peaks. In winter: Chele La receives heavy snowfall and is frequently road-blocked November–February.
Wildlife Around Chele La
The conifer forests below Chele La are excellent habitat for: Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal (Danphe Pheasant), Satyr Tragopan, Rufous-necked Hornbill (lower elevations), Golden Langur (Haa side), and Barking Deer. Bird-watching at Chele La is exceptional in spring (March–May).
Best Months to Visit Chele La
April–May: Rhododendron bloom, best wildflower display. June–September: Frequent clouds, lush green, but views often blocked. October–November: Crisp autumn days with best mountain clarity. December–February: Pass frequently closed due to snow — check road conditions before attempting.
