Complete guide to the Jomolhari Base Camp Trek — 7-day itinerary, Lingzhi Dzong, Jomolhari views, permits, best season, and what to expect.
Jomolhari Trek Overview
The Jomolhari Base Camp Trek is considered Bhutan's most dramatic and scenically rewarding multi-day trek. The route leads from Paro into the wilderness of the Jomolhari massif, culminating at Jangothang camp (4,080 m) — a glacier-ringed meadow directly beneath Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m), the second-highest peak in Bhutan.
Trek Itinerary (7 Days)
Day 1: Paro → Shana (2,860 m). 19 km, 7 hours. Day 2: Shana → Thangthangkha (3,610 m). 18 km, 7 hours. Day 3: Thangthangkha → Jangothang base camp (4,080 m). 14 km, 6 hours. Day 4: Rest day at Jangothang for acclimatisation + Jomolhari views. Day 5: Jangothang → Soi Yaksa (4,890 m). 12 km, 6 hours. Day 6: Soi Yaksa → Thombu Shong. 18 km. Day 7: Thombu Shong → Drukgyel Dzong → Paro. 19 km.
Key Highlights
Mount Jomolhari (7,326 m): The 'Bride of Kanchenjunga' — one of Bhutan's most sacred peaks and a stunning backdrop to Jangothang base camp. Lingzhi Dzong: A ruined 17th-century fortress dramatically perched on a hilltop ridge. Wildlife: Blue sheep, snow leopard (rare), Himalayan wolf, golden eagle, Himalayan monal.
Difficulty & Fitness Level
The Jomolhari Trek is rated Strenuous–Challenging due to high altitude (max 4,890 m at Soi Yaksa), long daily distances (12–19 km), and variable weather. Prior multi-day trekking experience at altitude is strongly recommended. Altitude sickness medication advised.
Best Season
April–June: Snow melting, wildflowers on lower slopes, clear Jomolhari views in early morning. September–November: Best autumn clarity, stable weather, and the most popular season.
Permits & Inclusions
All high-altitude treks require a restricted area permit from the Tourism Council of Bhutan in addition to standard tourist permits. Glen View Travels includes: camping equipment (tent, sleeping mat, kitchen tent), certified trekking guide, cook, horsemen, all meals, and emergency first aid.
