Druk Path Trek guide — 5-day route from Paro to Thimphu crossing high lakes, ancient ruins, rhododendron forests, and Himalayan views.

Druk Path Trek Overview

The Druk Path Trek is Bhutan's most popular multi-day trek, traversing from Paro to Thimphu (or vice versa) across a high ridge at 4,200–4,600 m. The 5-day, 73 km trail passes through rhododendron and conifer forests, past a chain of sacred high-altitude lakes, and over ruined dzong fortresses — all with panoramic views of the Himalayan snowfields.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Paro (2,250 m) → Jele Dzong camp (3,480 m). 5 km, 4 hours. Day 2: Jele Dzong → Jangchulakha camp (3,770 m). 11 km, 6 hours. Day 3: Jangchulakha → Jimilangtsho lake camp (3,870 m). 8 km, 5 hours. Day 4: Jimilangtsho → Simkota camp (4,130 m). 9 km, 6 hours. Day 5: Simkota → Thimphu (2,320 m). 8 km, 4 hours.

Key Highlights Along the Trail

Jele Dzong ruins: 17th-century fortress above Paro with mountain panoramas. Sacred mountain lakes: Jimilangtsho, Janetso, Simkotso — surrounded by prayer flags and believed to be home to lake deities. Rhododendron forests: spectacular March–May bloom. Wildlife: blue sheep (bharal), musk deer, Himalayan monal pheasant, golden langur.

Best Season for Druk Path Trek

March–May: rhododendron bloom, clear days, some snow at high camps. September–November: crisp autumn weather, excellent visibility, most popular season. December–February: snow covered, only for experienced trekkers with winter gear. July–August: heavy rain, leeches, slippery trails — not recommended.
