Best Time to Visit Bhutan: Season-by-Season Travel Guide

By Glen View Travels • Published 2026-08-19

Month-by-month breakdown of Bhutan's seasons — festivals, weather, crowd levels, and which type of traveller loves each season most.

Spring: March – May

The most popular tourist season in Bhutan. Rhododendrons burst into 46 species of blooms. Paro Tshechu (March/April) is Bhutan's most famous festival with thousands of attendees. Days are warm (15–22°C), nights cool. Tiger's Nest trail is at its finest. Crowds and hotel prices are highest in March–April.

Summer / Monsoon: June – August

Bhutan receives heavy monsoon rains making mountain roads slippery. The Himalayas are cloud-covered. However: lush green landscapes, very few tourists, lower prices (SDF same but hotels discounted). Haa Valley and Bumthang interior receive less rain. Good time for dzong interiors, Thimphu city, and off-the-beaten-path exploration.

Autumn: September – November

Second-best season alongside spring. Skies clear after monsoon — brilliant mountain views at Dochula Pass. Thimphu Tshechu (September/October) and Black-Necked Crane Festival (November, Phobjikha) are highlights. Trekking season peaks — ideal for Druk Path Trek and Jomolhari Base Camp. Cool days (10–18°C) and cold nights.

Winter: December – February

Cold (0–10°C days, below freezing nights). Haa Valley and high passes like Chele La see snowfall. Paro and Punakha valleys are milder and pleasant. Druk Wangyal Tshechu at Dochula Pass (December). Far fewer tourists — excellent for peaceful monastery experiences and authentic village encounters. Some high-altitude treks inaccessible.
