Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is well-connected to all major Indian cities, and the Phuentsholing border crossing is the most efficient land entry point into Bhutan.

Bagdogra to Phuentsholing (India–Bhutan Border)

Distance: 170 km. Duration: 3.5–4.5 hours by private car. Route: Bagdogra → Siliguri → NH-17 → Jaigaon (India side) → Phuentsholing (Bhutan side). The road passes through lush tea gardens, the Terai forests of the Dooars, and the Torsa River plains.

Phuentsholing Border Town

Phuentsholing is a busy commercial border town at the base of the Himalayan foothills. Stay overnight here if you arrive late — several good hotels including Hotel Pelkhil and Hotel Druk. Obtain Bhutan Entry Permit from the Bhutan Immigration office (open 9 AM–5 PM). The immigration process takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on crowds.

Phuentsholing to Thimphu

Distance: 176 km. Duration: 4–5 hours by road. The road climbs steeply from 300 m to 2,320 m through dense broadleaf forest, dramatic river gorges, and small Bhutanese villages. Key stops: Kharbandi Monastery (above Phuentsholing), Chukha Hydroelectric Dam viewpoint, Chapcha town.

Thimphu to Paro

Distance: 54 km. Duration: 1–1.5 hours. An easy, mostly flat drive through the Paro River valley. Most tours do Paro first or last as it hosts Paro International Airport.
